Rideshare

Lyft or Uber drivers give this ride. It works well for last-minute trips.

Good fit:

Can walk to the car and get in without help

Can be ready within 5 minutes of the driver's arrival

Can carry their own bags or gear

Can get ride updates on a phone

Not a good fit:

Needs any help from the driver

Lives where drivers are hard to find

Needs supervision but has no caregiver with them

Taxi

Taxis work well when a rider needs a little more time than rideshare allows, or lives where rideshare drivers are scarce.

Good fit:

Can walk to the car and get in without help

Can carry their own bags or gear

May need the driver to wait more than 5 minutes

Is under 18 and traveling without a parent or guardian

Not a good fit:

Needs any help from the driver

Needs a ride right away (taxis may need lead time)

Needs supervision but has no caregiver with them

Medical Sedan

A first aid–certified driver gives this ride. They can walk the rider from door to door.

Good fit:

Can walk, but may need help getting to or into the car

May need help carrying bags or medical gear

May need the driver to wait more than 5 minutes

Is sedated but alert and aware of who, where, and when they are

Not a good fit:

Needs a ride right away (medical sedans may need lead time)

Is sedated and not alert or aware

Wheelchair Van (WCV)

A driver trained in ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) support and medical care gives this ride. Some drivers can help with up to three stairs.

Good fit:

Rides in a wheelchair or scooter

Can move into and out of the wheelchair without help

Can sit safely in the wheelchair during the ride

Not a good fit:

Needs a ride right away (WCVs may need lead time)

Needs help moving into or out of the wheelchair

Has more than three stairs and needs help on them

Needs the driver to manage their oxygen

Cannot safely sit in the wheelchair during the ride (for example, due to an injury)

Note: WCV drivers cannot enter the rider's home to help.

Stretcher Van

A crew of one or two gives this ride for riders who must stay lying down but don't need medical monitoring. The crew can help door to door.

Good fit:

Is bed-confined or can't sit in a wheelchair

Doesn't need medical monitoring during the ride

Can manage their own oxygen if needed

Needs a stair chair to get down stairs safely

Not a good fit:

Needs a ride right away (stretcher vans may need lead time)

Needs the driver to manage their oxygen

Needs medical monitoring during the ride

Ambulance (BLS, ALS, SCT/CCT)

A crew of two gives this ride for riders who must stay lying down and need medical monitoring. The level of care depends on the rider's needs:

BLS (Basic Life Support): basic monitoring

ALS (Advanced Life Support): more advanced monitoring

SCT/CCT (Specialty Care Transport / Critical Care Transport): the highest level of monitoring
