Comprehensive Overview on Ambulatory Vehicle Types

For riders who are ambulatory, Roundtrip offers three vehicle types, each designed to provide different levels of support to meet their unique needs:

Rideshare

Rideshare is a program in which individuals will drive their own vehicle at their convenience to transport riders. Roundtrip is partnered with two of the biggest rideshare companies in the United States: Lyft and Uber.

Rideshare has no restrictions on advanced notice for booking, meaning that you may book rideshare rides five minutes from the requested ride time or even weeks/months in advance! Rideshare is an on-demand service, meaning that even if a ride is booked in advance, we will not search the rideshare network for driver availability until 5-20 minutes before the ride is scheduled to be picked up (depending on your organization's settings).

Rideshare is a great option for riders who are ambulatory and may need transportation with minimal notice. It’s important to note that rideshare drivers are not required to provide any kind of assistance during transport. For more information on what rideshare can offer, review our dedicated rideshare article here.

✔️ Best for Riders Who:

  • Can walk to the vehicle and get in/out of the vehicle without assistance from the driver
  • Can get to the vehicle within 5 minutes of the driver’s arrival
  • Can load any personal belongings or medical equipment without assistance from the driver
  • Can receive ride notifications via a mobile device

🚫 Not Ideal for Riders Who:

  • Require any assistance from the driver include getting to the vehicle, getting in/out of the vehicle, or loading belongings
  • Live in rural areas where driver availability may be low
  • Require supervision but do not have a parent, guardian, or caregiver present (i.e. riders who are sedated, cognitively impaired, unaccompanied minors, etc.)

Taxi

Taxis are another ambulatory vehicle type which are ideal for riders who do not require assistance from the driver. In addition, taxis are a great option for riders who may need more time to walk to the vehicle than what rideshare can accommodate. Taxis are often used as an alternative in areas with low rideshare driver availability. Unlike rideshare which is on-demand, however, taxis may require some advanced lead time in order to secure a transportation company.

✔️ Best for Riders Who:

  • Can walk to the vehicle and get in/out of the vehicle without assistance from the driver
  • Can load any personal belongings or medical equipment without assistance from the driver
  • May need the driver for wait more than 5 minutes so the rider can walk to the vehicle
  • Are unable to use rideshare due to low driver availability in their area
  • Are under the age of 18 and may be traveling without a parent or guardian

🚫 Not Ideal for Riders Who:

  • Require any assistance from the driver include getting to the vehicle, getting in/out of the vehicle, or loading belongings
  • Require immediate transportation (Taxis may require lead time to be secured)
  • Require supervision but do not have a parent, guardian, or caregiver present (i.e. riders who are sedated, cognitively impaired, etc.)

Medical Sedan

Medical sedans are a great option for riders who are ambulatory but may need some additional assistance from the driver. Medical sedan drivers are first aid certified and can provide door-to-door assistance - meaning they can help escort the rider from the door of the pick-up location to the door of the drop-off location. Similar to taxis, medical sedans can provide more flexibility in wait times than rideshare but may require some advanced lead time in order to secure a transportation company.

✔️ Best for Riders Who:

  • Can walk to the vehicle but may need assistance from the driver to get to the vehicle or in/out of the vehicle
  • May need assistance from the driver with loading personal belongings or medical equipment
  • May need the driver for wait more than 5 minutes so the rider can walk to the vehicle
  • Are unable to use rideshare due to low driver availability in their area
  • Are under the age of 18 and may be traveling without a parent or guardian
  • Are under sedation but are alert and oriented to person, place, and time (A&Ox3)

🚫 Not Ideal for Riders Who:

  • Require immediate transportation (Medical sedans may require lead time to be secured)
  • Are under sedation but not alert and oriented to person, place, and time (A&Ox3)

Comprehensive Overview on Non-Ambulatory Vehicle Types

For riders who are non-ambulatory, Roundtrip offers several vehicle types, each designed to provide different levels of support to meet their unique needs:

Wheelchair Van

Wheelchair vans are an ideal option for riders who are non-ambulatory and may require transport with a mobility aid such as a wheelchair or motorized scooter. Wheelchair van drivers are ADA and medically trained to be able to assist riders as needed. Depending on the rider’s needs, wheelchair van drivers may also be able to provide door-to-door or door-thru-door assistance - meaning they can help escort the rider from the door of the pick-up location to the door of the drop-off location or into the lobby of the drop-off location.

  • Important Note: Wheelchair van drivers cannot enter the rider’s home to assist. Also, the driver cannot assist the rider down more than 3 consecutive stairs. If the rider is able to navigate the stairs on their own or has a caregiver to assist, the rider may be transported via a wheelchair van. If the rider is unable to get down the stairs without assistance from the driver, a higher level transport will need to be booked so a stair chair can be used to safely move the rider down the stairs.

Like most other vehicle types, wheelchair vans require advanced lead time in order to secure a transportation company.

✔️ Best for Riders Who:

  • Must be transported in a wheelchair or with other mobility equipment (i.e. scooter, motorized wheelchair, etc.)
  • Can self-transfer in/out of the wheelchair as needed without assistance from the driver
  • Can safely support themselves in a wheelchair during transport

🚫 Not Ideal for Riders Who:

  • Require immediate transportation (Wheelchair vans may require lead time to be secured)
  • Require assistance to transfer in/out of their wheelchair
  • Have more 3 stairs at their home and need assistance from the driver to navigate the stairs
  • Require oxygen to be provided or regulated by the transportation company
  • Are unable to safely support themselves in a wheelchair during transport (i.e. hand contractures, wrist injury, shoulder injury, cannot sit at a 90° angle, etc.)

Stretcher Van

Stretcher vans are an option for non-ambulatory riders who are bed-confined (or unable to be transported via a wheelchair van) but do not require any medical monitoring. Stretcher vans are usually staffed with 1-2 crew members. The crew may also provide door-thru-door assistance - meaning they can help escort the rider from the door of the pick-up location and through the doors of the drop-off location. Please note that stretcher vans are not available in all markets so ambulance may be the only available stretcher level transport available. Like most other vehicle types, stretcher vans require advanced lead time in order to secure a transportation company.

✔️ Best for Riders Who:

  • Are bed-confined or unable to sit in a wheelchair during transport
  • Do not require any medical monitoring during transport
  • Can supply and regulate their own oxygen if needed
  • Require a stair chair to safely navigate going down stairs

🚫 Not Ideal for Riders Who:

  • Require immediate transportation (Stretcher vans may require lead time to be secured)
  • Require oxygen to be supplied or regulated by the transportation company
  • Require any medical monitoring during transport

Ambulance (BLS, ALS, SCT/CCT)

Ambulance are an option for non-ambulatory riders who are bed-confined and require medical monitoring during transport. Ambulances are usually staffed with 2 crew members. The crew may also provide door-thru-door assistance - meaning they can help escort the rider from the door of the pick-up location and through the doors of the drop-off location.

Roundtrip offers several different ambulance types, varying in skill level and criticality to meet your rider’s needs. Within the Book Trip Flow, Roundtrip has criteria to help you identify which ambulance level can accommodate your rider’s needs. Like most other vehicle types, ambulances require advanced lead time in order to secure a transportation company.

✔️ Best for Riders Who:

  • Are bedbound or unable to sit in a wheelchair during transport
  • Require basic or advanced medical monitoring during transport
  • Require oxygen to be supplied and/or regulated during transport
  • Require a stair chair to safely navigate going down stairs

🚫 Not Ideal for Riders Who:

  • Require immediate transportation (Ambulances may require lead time to be secured)
